1.) Social Security Administration Plans To Update and Revise Its Rules
For Evaluating Mental Disorders The Social Security Administration (SSA) is planning to update and revise the rules it uses to evaluate mental disorders in both adults and children who apply for Social Security disability benefits or Supplemental Security Income payments based on. However, before drafting any revisions, SSA is asking interested people and organizations to send them comments and suggestions for revising the rules they use to evaluate mental disorders.In addition to your comments about its rules, SSA is also interested in any ideas you have about how to improve their programs for people who have mental disorders, especially those who would like to work full-time or part-time with supports.The Social Security Administration will accept your comments no later than June 16, 2003."Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" in the Federal Register on March
17, 2003 Federal Register: (Volume 68, Number 51) 20 CFR Parts 404 and 416 (Regulations Nos. 4 and http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aces140.html.

2.) Medical Insurance Empowerment Program: SNAP -
(Special Needs Advocate for Parents) is a national informational source for families that provides assistance for parents in sorting out private medical insurance authorization and reimbursement problems and issues. The goal of SNAP is to provide information, education, advocacy and referrals to families with children of all ages and disabilities. Phone 1-888-310-9889 or visit their website at www.snapinfo.org

3.) Prescription Drug Assistance Programs:
There are several websites that may be helpful in determining if you are eligible for assistance in paying for prescription drug costs www.needymeds.com , www.rxassist.org, www.phrma.org.   In addition, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufactures of America have a new interactive drug site that provides a one-stop link to more than 1400 medicines. Patients can fill out an online form and receive a list of programs for which they may qualify. www.helpingpatients.org

4.) Self- Determination - A Parentís Guide to the Self-Determined
Learning Model for Early Elementary Students' was recently released by the University of Kansas. This guide focused on choice making, problem solving and goal setting. Cost $2.50. Contact 785-864-7600 or by email: bea-@dole.isi.ukans.edu.

5.) Guardianship - Making a Difference:
Thinking about Support in the Transition Process. A Discussion on issues parents of children with developmental disabilities need to consider as their children transition into adulthood.
